Rihanna and Chris Brown: Will a Reunion Hurt Her Career?
Sep 28th 2012, 14:06

(PacificCoastNews)Earlier this week, Rihanna boldly offered emotional support to her abusive ex-boyfriend Chris Brown just before he headed into court for a probation hearing. First, the singer issued a cryptic tweet with a familiar hashtag: “Praying for you baby, my best wishes are with you today! Remember that whatever God does in our lives, it is WELL DONE!!! #1Love.”

Within a few hours she expressed the same feelings in a direct tweet to Chris Brown, eventually deleting her previous tweet. “I’m praying for you and wishing u the best today!” Rihanna wrote, affirming once again what many have trouble believing: These two are close once more.

Three and a half years have passed since Brown brutally beat Rihanna in a rented Lamborghini on the eve of the Grammy Awards. Both artists have been incredibly prolific, averaging an album a year each. And both have been intensely focused on distancing themselves from the violent of their shared past — but not from each other. The exes have actually been testing the waters of public perception bit by bit since February 2011, when a judge eased the restraining order that kept them from interacting.

In May 2011 the pair took their friendship public and started following each other on Twitter. “Its f**kin twitter, not the alter! calm down,” Rihanna snapped at a disapproving fan.

By the end of the year, eagle-eyed fans picked up on a couple of curiously-timed tweets that seemed to hint at secret interactions between the duo. Also telling was the fact that Rihanna's heartfelt but cryptic tweets about love and loss were often accompanied with the hashtag "1Love." By February 2012, the two had gone public with a renewed professional relationship, collaborating on his and hers remixes. His opening line on Rihanna's "Birthday Cake" remix seemed in particularly poor taste: "Girl I wanna f**k you right now / Been a long time, I've been missing your body."

At this point, Chris Brown and Rihanna's relationship is practically an open secret. Over the summer, the pair rendezvoused during Rihanna's boozy, sun-drenched vacation in St. Tropez, where they were reportedly spotted kissing at a star-studded yacht party. They also shared a remarkably casual peck at the MTV Video Music Awards as Rihanna made her way to the stage to accept an award for Video of the Year.

One wonders how Brown's supposed longtime girlfriend Karrueche Tran feels about the whole thing. Every time the reunion rumors resurface, Brown's rep points to Tran as evidence that the claims are untrue. But Brown tellingly deleted all photos of the aspiring model from his Twitter account in July, and while the pair have been snapped by the paparazzi a couple of times in the past month, their interactions online have dwindled down to nil.

Though Rihanna admitted in her recent interview with Oprah Winfrey that Brown was the "love of [her] life," she denied they were actually dating. She may have been telling the truth, but it's hard to believe she would have admitted to a rekindled relationship either way: Brown remains a pop culture pariah to many, despite his ability to sell records.

But maybe Rihanna and Chris needn't worry about their reputations. Veteran publicist Liam Collopy, president of Levine Communications, says Rihanna's pretty much untouchable either way. Though he admits that the singer might lose favor with abuse support, Collopy believes that the singer has two Ts working in her favor: Time and talent.

"A certain amount of time has passed since the actual incident that many have either forgiven Brown or moved on from the incident altogether," Collopy explains. "Rihanna has further demonstrated a genuine resiliency and incredible talent to not only prevail but profit from her turbulent relationship with many of her songs addressing the rocky affair. This is not a Whitney Houston/Bobby Brown scenario wherein one exercises such influence over another perhaps to one’s detriment. Rihanna has proven that not only is she her own person, she has staying power.”

Unbelievably, there are actually quite a few fans who are actively rooting for Chris and Rihanna to get back together.  There's a Tumblr. There's an "official" Twitter account. And there's even fan fiction.

Even Rihanna and Chris Brown's respective families seem to be rooting for a reconciliation. Brown's mother Joyce Hawkins regularly sends her love to Rihanna via Twitter, and Rihanna's father Ronald Fenty told Grazia magazine (via NY Daily News) earlier this year, “Chris has matured a lot. I think everybody has to put the past behind them. And they seem to have done that.

"Her fans are hoping it will happen. They see them as a perfect couple," he added. Nevermind that time Brown likened his ex to a "bad fur" on an unofficial remix.
Chris has matured a lot,” he said. “I think everybody has to put the past behind them. And they seem to have done that. Being a couple is all up to her.”

So maybe the world — barring, of course, those who feel it is unacceptable for Chris Brown to have a career, much less a relationship with the woman he abused — is ready for Rihanna and Chris Brown to reunite after all. Then the question becomes whether they'll have a happy ending.
