No matter how much they try to create their own individual band identities, One Direction and The Wanted will forever be inextricably linked. After all, they're the face of the boy band resurgence, they're both European, they both cater to legions of teenage female fans, and they both consist of five perfectly coiffed and well-manicured young men. Plus, the precedent is there – no one remembers N*SYNC without also remembering the Backstreet Boys, right?
Despite the undeniable similarities with their counterparts, the guys from The Wanted don't necessarily consider themselves the other side of the same pop music coin. During a U.K. radio interview on Monday, host Chris Moyles asked the guys from The Wanted about the comparisons with One Direction, adding the insinuation the 1D guys were the more successful group after their three-win night at the MTV VMAs late last week. Singer Tom Park stepped up to the plate to respond with a slight dig at the rivals band, saying, "Our new single 'I Found You' is a bit different. We like to mix it up. We try not to be stereotypical."
Oh snap, "stereotype" burn! Not to be outdone, One Direction's Harry Styles fired back on Twitter, joking, "Chris Moyles' is actually right though… If 1D aren't in the picture, The Wanted would've been WAY more popular!"
Even though the comments incited an all-out social media flame war between the groups' respective fan(atic)s, the cheeky back-and-forth between the British/Irish lads appears to be in jest. Things could heat up in the coming months though when The Wanted officially release their "I Found You" single in early November, the same month One Direction will drop their sophomore album, Take Me Home.
So, in this battle of the boy bands, who's side are you on?
